Stop Motion in Sunday Traffic
poetic reading
Shopping thin air — many bags bulging. All gathered to wait for the tram. What an impressive congregation of emptiness. What a celebration of color and difference — the everyday objects of a consumer society, so skeptical of variance when it comes to the carriers of these colorful bags.
Objective description
An empty tram stop shelter. In stop-motion style, empty plastic bags of various sizes arrive inside the shelter. The bags fill the entire hut before leaving one by one.
Plausible association
Modern urban life entails a consumerist lifestyle involving utensils such as plastic bags in all sizes and colors. This film draws attention to things that have no value in themselves but are seen as cheap helper items. Yet, in countries where Western affluent goods are scarce, people often fill items like shopping bags with devotion. Hence, this film is about the symbolic nature of consumerist utensils.
Artistic intention
This film offers a subtle critique of consumerism and raises questions about necessity.
