Eskapaden im Sonnenschein
poetic reading
Summer The grass stands tall. It has overgrown the rows of benches in an open-air theatre. Two boys fell asleep, tipped forward. How much patience did they bring, how much hope for an event that might keep them awake? Here they lie peacefully side by side, sunk into sleep, in the tall grass, between empty wooden benches, in the sultry weight of summer.
Objective description
Tall grass dominates the entire picture. No horizon. No shade in the hot summer. Wooden benches can be seen between the stalks. Benches in rows, like for an audience of an open-air stage. In the center of the picture, two young men sink forward, asleep.
Plausible association
When living beings sleep, they take time out from the world. They choose a place that feels safe enough at least until they return. That nothing would happen here appears as certain as amen in church. But how certain is that now?
Artistic intention
Sleep is generally considered a time for regeneration. We are briefly away, only to return fit and present. But that does the sleep an injustice. Much more happens during sleep, and we remain sensitive to everything around us, who is near and who is far. Social beings remain social even in sleep.
